The Ivy Family

Looking Back in Time

Did you realize that there are 18,152 people in the U.S. with the last name Ivy? Statistically the 1943rd most popular last name. I didn't until I received a link one day to How Many of Me. Of those who have use the spelling of Ivey, There are 30,253 people in the U.S. Statistically the 1170th most popular last name.

Hard to believe there are that many of us, isn't it? But the Ivy Family, no matter which way it is spelled, originally came from England. In fact, the Ivy's were in the middle group between the nobility and the peasants. There's even a knight, who served on the jury of the peerage which found King Charles I guilty of treason and sentenced to being beheaded by the English people.

After the discovery of the New World, the Ivy's like so many of their countrymen migrate and settled in what would become the United States of America. While I can find no proof of it and nothing in any records, I have a suspicion that the move from England to the New World may have been in reaction to the return of Charles II, son of Charles I, to the throne. Since Sir George Ivy did sit on the jury which found the king's father guilty and led to his death. The timeline seems to fit.

The majority seem to have first went to the Carolinas. From the Carolinas, the family moved westward, first to Alabama and then to Mississippi. It is the move from Alabama to Mississippi, where our particular branch of the family's history actually begins.

Before getting into our family tree from Grandpa Alfred Herman Ivy and Grandma Ozell Elizabeth McKnight, I am going to share a little of our history from both England and before moving to Mississippi, which is where Grandpa and Grandma met.
